History
The first written information about Donastia-San SebastiCn mentions a monastery located in a district that even today is called San Sebastián El Antiguo. In the 11th and 12th centuries, San Sebastián El Antiguo monastery was, for the people of that area, a spiritual centre, as well as a centre for the growing social and administrative life. San Sebastian’s Port became the gateway to the sea of a richer, bigger and growing Castilian monarchy. Several Kings dominated San Sebastian bringing positive changes but there were a lots of wars such as a fratricidal struggle between King Peter the Cruel and Enrique the Merciful led to a division in Gipuzkoa, leaving San Sebastián, Mutriku and Getaria separated from the rest. While Gipuzkoa that already had a Brotherhood ruled by the "Elders" chose Enrique, San Sebastián on the other hand, a town of freemen free from oligarchic lineages, and against the "Elders", will choose Peter I.
Geography
Donostia-San Sebastian is a coastal city in the Bizkaia Gulf, situated in the Basque Country. The visit though the city is relaxed, with very nice natural views. There are beautiful mountain places out from the traffic of the city. In few minutes walking from the city, like it is possible to admire an excellent view of the bay.
Population
The city of Donostia–San Sebastian has 182,361 inhabitants, according to the municipal census data of 31 December 2002. This accounts for 27% of the province of Gipuzkoa of which the city is the administrative capital and also accounts for more than half (58%) of the population in the immediate area surrounding the city (Donostialdea).

The city’s economy continues to be mainly in the tertiary sector, with a strong presence of retail outlets (16%) and the construction sector is also strong in the city (10%). The map of the city’s business network is as follows: 50% of businesses consolidated in the market have a lifetime greater than 5 years.
