History
The first mentions of Olomouc date back to the year 1017 when Moravia was joined to the Czech Premyslide state. During 16th century, there again occurred an expansion of culture, in Upper Square splendid palaces of nouveau riches grew almost in Renaissance style. In 1566, the Jesuits came to Olomouc, they founded colleges and a grammar school which was promoted to university. After establishing of independent Czechoslovakia, Czech inhabitants outnumbered other nationalities and this was even more considerable after joining other towns, today's suburban areas.
Geography
The Olomouc Region is in the eastern part of Czech Republic, it extending in the North of Central Moravia and has a 104-km long international border with Poland. The area of 5139,3 km2 ranks the Region eight among the CR´s 14 regions, includes large protected areas Jeseníky (the Jeseníky Mountains) and Litovelské Pomoraví (the Litovel Lowland of the River Morava) accounting together for 10.8 % of the area (the national share of large protected areas is 14.7 %).
Population
Olomouc city has 106 278 inhabitants (53% women) and its district has 226 651 inhabitants. The demographic development of the Olomouc Region in last ten years can be characterized by an ongoing population decrease in the pre-productive 0-14 age group and an increase in the post-productive 60 + age group. The number of marriages has rapidly decreased after the social-economic changes in the CR in the early 1990´s.
Economy
Economic Development
The Olomouc Region has a rather industrial character, with the highest employment reported for the sectors of industry and construction Employment in the sector of agriculture accounts for 8.1 %, which is by one half above the national average (5.5.%). Predominant role is played by enterprises in the sector of general engineering, manufacture of fabricated metal products and manufacture of electrical and optical equipment. Other important sectors include textile industry, glass industry and manufacture of materials for construction purposes.
Strategy
- The development of entrepreneurship is strongly conditioned by transport accessibility.
- Educational system is represented by a network of basic and secondary schools. There is one public university in the Region, comprising seven faculties and providing both Bachelor’s and Master’s degree courses.
- The development of foreigner tourism as well as Czech nationals, come to experience exceptional landscape, to see nature formations, national heritage sights and other places of interest.
